Would pine needles make good "rose-bed" mulch?

Some-one on another site ask why grass won't grow under her pine tree. The answer give was" it acidifies the soil". Rose's love acid soil.

Would pine needles make good "rose-bed" mulch?
Absolutely. The needles are also easy to move away if you need to get down to the soil for any reason.





I used to grow roses. I miss having a yard flowerbeds. Hard to do much when you live in a 2nd floor apartment. LOL!

Reply:I would test your soil with a cheap PH tester first. Nothing grows under pine trees because it becomes too acidic. You don't want to make your garden bed the same. If your soil is already on the acidic side leave it alone.





I grow beautiful roses in a slightly alkaline to neutral soil so they're pretty adaptable. Secret is good drainage, moisture on roots not leaves (fungus prevention) and lots of fertilizer and organic matter.
Reply:True roses live pine needles or bark. They thrive on an slightly acid soil. So use it.
Reply:Some of the most beautiful and aromatic roses I have ever seen were growing on old homesteads in the mountains surrounded by pines. I would say definitely yes.
