My son needs a new bunk bed and I was looking at the pine one from big lots. Somebody at a different furniture store told me that pine is not safe for bunk beds because it is too soft and could colapse. I was wonndering what you guys thought.
Is a pine bunkbed safe?
my son had pine bunk beds from the time he was four up till last year so that was 12 years..they were in great shape..and he is all boy as his is buddy..if they survived those two they can survive anyone else's kid
Reply:My daughter has had one for a few years now. She's 5'8 and 165 pounds, and sleeps on the top. We've had no problems. One thing I want to warn you about with any wood bunk though, the smell from the treated lumber when the bed is brand new will be horrible. My girls had nosebleeds for 3 weeks after we bought the bunk. Lots of lemon oil treatments finally helped. I remember the same thing happening when my little sisters got bunk beds when they were little. If you have people in your home with severe allergies or asthma, I'd think twice before buying any wood bunk beds unless the lumber is non-treated.
Reply:a bed is not a jumping board. pine is OK. but it just that you need to look at the joints and screws and stuff. what loose it is assembled and stuff like that. hell you can make a good set with 2x4 and stuff that or good too. so i mt self would check the papers and bulletin boards for a good deal. and used furniture stores out too. it just up too you. if your kids are small a cheap bed might last a will. but if your kids are bigger and heavy you might need something stronger. i hope this helps you . good luck.
Reply:I think they are jerking you around. They want you to spend more money. Pine is fine. We have them and have 3 kids. COmpletely safe.
Reply:not true most of all the structural lumber is pine if the bed is constructed well don't worry
Reply:Pine is fine, there are pine floor boards that survive a hundred years.Pine does not have the same stability or scratch resistance as harder woods but it is more about he way it is constructed. Pine furniture tends to need to be a but thicker to get the same stability as a harder wood like oak but there is not problem with a pine bed, just make sure it is a well designed/built one. Worst issue with kids is it may scratch easier than some harder woods and therefore not age as well but a good acrylic finish topcoat should alleviate that issue.
