Neighbors pine needles are ruining my hedges?

My neighbors pine needles are dropping into my yard, I throw them back in piles across his fence, but he states that is illegal dumping, and he will take me to court. Any thoughts?

Neighbors pine needles are ruining my hedges?
First of all, pine needles shouldn't be ruining your hedges, they are actually a nice mulch. Second, he doesn't have any leg to stand on saying you are dumping illegally. Third, you can check out your legal standing to make your neighbor trim his tree back away from your property. Finally, personally, I don't see anything really wrong with throwing them back over but if he is getting so gruffy about it you'd be better off to throw them out with your other yard debris.
Reply:Why do you throw them back in piles?? That's pretty rude...
Reply:i dont know if it is illegal or not but they didi come from his tree and your just giving it back to him. how can he prove that you threw it over? throw them over at night when he cant record you doing it. good luck
Reply:Legally the fallen debris from the tree is your responsibility, not his. Sounds like you have much bigger problems than a few pine needles. Chill
Reply:just be a good neighbor and rake them up. why start trouble. it's not worth it. ........... he probably could take you to court for dumping in his yard if he wanted to be a _ick
Reply:Yes.. he is right. you are illegally dumping on to his property...... BUT.... he has no right to have a tree... plant.... whatever that hangs onto/into your place. I suspect that if he is not willing to correct the problem, you should call the police and get it settled... DO NOT dump or throw anymore onto his yard because that puts YOU in the wrong

I hate it when neighbors are so darned disgusting and it happens all t he time
Reply:Counter sue him for littering.

IDK sounds kinda silly on his part, but cover yourself.

Are pine needles from a christmas tree ok to eat/chew on?

I was sitting next to my christmas tree doing my homework and I decided to take a pine needle and chew on it. It tasted pretty good. Am I going to get food poisoning from this?

Are pine needles from a christmas tree ok to eat/chew on?
probably not, if it was poisoness, it wouldnt be sold as a "christmas tree" for families and children to be around.
Reply:Since we also eat pine nuts, there is probably nothing wrong with the nedles.
Reply:I don't know, but I wouldn't eat the tree needles, b/c it's not an accepted food source for humans.
Reply:no the chemicals in them ruin your teeth sometimes
Reply:No but I wouldn't eat the rest of the tree if i were you.
Reply:Now why would you want to eat pine needles?
Reply:Likely not, but in larger quantities, they could make you sick.
Reply:Yes...and so is lead....chow down!
Reply:No, that is the sap, it is like raw maple syrup. That would just be the glucose from it,

it's fine, don't worry just don't go overboard!
Reply:not sure
Reply:i chewed on stuff like that before and i got sick but not really sick
Reply:Move away from the tree slowly..that's right..slow now...Ok, Christmas tree eater rehab squad get them!
Reply:no, but why?
Reply:Make sure what kind of tree you have...Hemlock or that variety You WONT be a happy camper for Christmas. Ponderosa Pine especially not good to chew.
Reply:I guess it would be ok figuring that pine nuts which are often used in cooking and baking come from certain pine trees. But I personally would not eat them, think of the pain you may experience when the pine needles leave your body. OWWW!
Reply:as disturbing as that is, i cant say i didnt do that once..
Reply:are you a herbivore?
Reply:try them on your salads...yum.
Reply:You can actually make tea with it by cutting the tips (atleast that is what I've heard) but ur not suppose to eat it.
Reply:No, but there are almost certianly pesticides and other chemicals on it that you don't want in your body. You better stop.
Reply:Ive done it before and I'm fine (as fine as a person who puts random things in their mouth can be)
Reply:ignore those ignorant NOs, THEY ARE FINE TO EAT, though its best to just chew/suck on them then spit them out. Bear Grylls of Man VS Wild and The Boyscouts and the Armed Forces all agree, theyre a good source of vit C and moisture. i wouldnt make them a staple in your diet though, heh.

Are pine needles too acidic for compost?

I am in northern California. The pine needles are mixed with maple leaves.

Are pine needles too acidic for compost?
They can be added to the compost pile but pine needles can cause a problem if the soil is already acidic. If this is a problem, try adding a little lime to the compost.

If possible, It's a good idea to compost pine needles separately (because of the resin) -- and because of this, it takes much longer for these needles to break down in comparison to the maple leaves.

Pine needles can be used as a mulch (not composted) around acid loving plants.

Hope this answered your question! GOOD LUCK!
Reply:not at all, Home and Garden Magazine will tell you pine needles are the new landscape mulch.
Reply:Nope, infact they are excellent for acid loving plants like roses and hydrangeas. I use them all the time.

Potted pine not doing well?

I have a potted pine tree I bought last christmas. I have repotted it several months ago and it was doing fine. Then suddenly it wilted. The needles have a white powdery coating on them that look just like overspray from fake snow in a can.

I tried to clean it off, and it worked somewhat, but the tree is still wilted. What is wrong and how can I save my tree?

Potted pine not doing well?
Here is the answer to your problem. What you have are "woolly aphids". They are commonly found on coniferous trees such as your potted pine. The white fuzzy appearance is a waxy filament or protective cover. If you were to remove it you would see the aphid itself. They suck the plant juices and weaken the tree and if there are enough of them, it can and will cause the tree branches to wilt and turn brown and may cause death. The only way to get rid of them is with a systemic insecticide. Go to Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes garden center and purchase a liquid insecticide made by Ortho called "Systemic Insect Killer". It contains the active ingredient "Acephate" which is a strong systemic killer. It kills on contact, as well as systemically by entering the foliage, protecting the tree for up to about 3 or 4 weeks. If anything chews, sucks, or nibbles on the foliage, it's history! This will take care of the Woolly Aphids. Here is a link with some info about this product. Hope this answers your question.

Added Info: No, don't fertilize just yet. If the tree is wilting like you say, it's pretty well stressed out and needs to come around and perk up before you feed it. The aphids have apparently drained it pretty good. Hold off until it perks up and you see that the aphids are drying up after the treatment with the systemic.

Reply:They don't like wet feet - how much do your water it? does the soil smell sour

Consider dye free wood chips in the bottom and then soil from just above the root base.

Reply:sounds like you have an infestation...probably wooly mites... usually plants only get attacked when they are stressed out and unhappy...where is your tree living? Not many pine trees do well inside of a house...or in a pot for that matter!!! The bugs can be eliminated with a washing down with insecticidal soap...then a good shower a few days later. The best place for pine trees is outside in the ground...good luck!!
Reply:this one stumps me. it sounds just like powdery mildew, but none of my books mention it as a disease pines get. and i've never seen it, either. if it is p. mildew, the best thing you can do for it is spray it with neem oil immediately. very effective. non-toxic. if neem doesn't work, you know you don't have p. mildew--but god knows what.
Reply:i hate when that happens...
Reply:If there is still spray snow on the tree it will be suffocating it you must ensure this is all removed

Can pine mulch contaminate the garden soil?

We recently had several pine trees removed, and the tree people mulched them. We kept the mulch and spread it all over our dirt driveway and it packed in nicely. Now I want to use some as decorative mulch around my plants. My nephew told me that the mulch would eventually contaminate the ground with "terpentine" and my plants would die. True?

Can pine mulch contaminate the garden soil?
I don't know about turpentine, however, pine is very acidic and can burn roots of sensitive plants.

The outer beaches of Long Island NY used to use the collected Christmas trees for beach erosion prevention, until they realized it was killing off they natural plant life. Of coarse they stopped after that.

Don't use it in your flower beds.

Did you ever notice that nothing grows under a pine tree.
Reply:No, it's not true or pine mulch would never be sold. However, after Katrina, there were concerns about mulches that came from that area. I think it's ok now.
Reply:I bought pine mulch from my garden centre...as it said it was good for flowers.....pine trees can be acidic....but thats all to the good as I want my hydrengeas to turn blue...maye the acid in pine trees is what he is thinking of.
Reply:The only negative would be your soil would be very acidic. If you have evergreens and other acid loving plants in that area it is fine, but plants that prefer more of an alkaline soil will need some lime applied to them.

PS the Katrina thing was an urban legend.
Reply:their has been a problem with some mulches lately with termite infestations they used a

lot of the damaged trees from hurricane Katrina and apparently termites got at them

Which pastry is better, Pine Tart or White Eye?

Both pine tart and white eye r Guyanese pastrys. If u never had them, then DON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION UNLESS U WANT 2. Pine tarrt is a dough made with baking powder, butter, and flour that is filled with crushed pineapple in it. White eye is just plain good.

How do I get Pine Sap off my horse?

My older gelding decided that using a pine tree would be would be an acceptable scratching post %26amp; he now has sap from one end of him to the other...I have heard of using Peanut butter, margarine, or WD-40...(Am I removing pine sap or making cookies?..haha)..Anyone else have expierence or ideas on removing this sticky mess?

How do I get Pine Sap off my horse?
WD works but so does veggie oil. Just slather it on and rub the sap out of the hair. It is not a quick removal...it will take some work *read elbow grease* to get it out but once it does come out give him a bath and wash the oil off him.

Fun! Been there...
Reply:You can use alcohol! I use it to get those pesky sticking auction stickers off there rump. Good Luck
Reply:WD-40 really does work. I had a cat that got wrapped up in a fly strip. She was all sticky and ooky. The vet referred me to a groomer. The groomer came to my house and pulled out a can of WD-40. It was magic! He said that WD-40 is good for getting all kinds of things out of fur. And, as long as they don't ingest it and you don't overspray it, it is harmless to the animal. Of course he bathed and dried her when he was finished.

WD-40 has like 4,000 uses!

Zippo Pine Bar......?

Ok so my mare is a very close descendant of Zippo Pine Bar. And I know he is dead but Im just wondering what his stud fee WAS. Anyone know??

PS: I love him, and Barpassers Image [my gelding's sire]. And I know his stud fee alone was $2500.00

Zippo Pine Bar......?
I worked for Bob Perry Quarter Horses for nearly 8 years right up until the Perry's sold the ranch. I worked there when Zippo died and was present when he was buried. His grave marker says "You gave us the ride of our lives" he was buried under the American flag at the top of the driveway on the ranch (now belongs to Jim Babcock). He was the coolest horse ever and not a mean bone in his body. I worked for 5 of the 8 years there foaling mares during the breeding season and would have to feed him throughout the night because he had weight problems. When you opened his door, he wouldn't let you close it again and would butt it. He wanted you to stand and talk to him all night.

In 1995, his stud fee was $5000, in 1996 it was raised to $12,500 with a limited book (25 mares only) and then the last year (1997), he bred only Mrs Perry's mares and got 2 in foal, both colts that survived.

Would pine needles make good "rose-bed" mulch?

Some-one on another site ask why grass won't grow under her pine tree. The answer give was" it acidifies the soil". Rose's love acid soil.

Would pine needles make good "rose-bed" mulch?
Absolutely. The needles are also easy to move away if you need to get down to the soil for any reason.

I used to grow roses. I miss having a yard flowerbeds. Hard to do much when you live in a 2nd floor apartment. LOL!
Reply:I'm not a man, I'm a woman...but bravo you...enjoy! Report It

Reply:I would test your soil with a cheap PH tester first. Nothing grows under pine trees because it becomes too acidic. You don't want to make your garden bed the same. If your soil is already on the acidic side leave it alone.

I grow beautiful roses in a slightly alkaline to neutral soil so they're pretty adaptable. Secret is good drainage, moisture on roots not leaves (fungus prevention) and lots of fertilizer and organic matter.
Reply:True roses live pine needles or bark. They thrive on an slightly acid soil. So use it.
Reply:Some of the most beautiful and aromatic roses I have ever seen were growing on old homesteads in the mountains surrounded by pines. I would say definitely yes.
Reply:Yes, if roses like acid soil.

Paint pine dinning table from light oak to mohogany?

How can i paint pine dinning table from light oak to mohogany?

Paint pine dinning table from light oak to mohogany?
Well you don't really mean paint but stain. You need to remove any old finish or varnish. You can use a chemical stripper available from any home center. Then you will want to sand. Most chemical strippers will raise the grain especially on pine. Them apply the stain IAW manuf. instructions. Usually with a soft cloth then remove excess. You may need to sand again if it raises the grain. I would try an unseen spot to check for color before doing the whole table, like underneath. Pine absorbs stain readliy so the color may be a little darker than you expect. Then refinish I prefer old fasioned McCloskey's Ultra Spar varnish myself but use wahtever you like.
Reply:use a paint thinner or deglosser, to knock the shine off, restain it with mohogany stain , let it dry keep applying stain till u get the shade u want,
Reply:doubt you gotta even paint it... i would stain it and coat it... the stain will cover the pine look enough and leave the natural wood look too.... pain will cover alll the natural wood look
Reply:If the table has a coat of varnish on top of the existing stain it will have to be removed before applying new stain. If it is not varnished the new stain can go over the old. Zar makes the easiest stains to work with. Cabot interior stains are good, too. Read the label and you will have no trouble applying them. Give the stain time to dry and apply three coats of polyurethane varnish. I prefer water base urethane because it dries quickly enough to apply three coats in one day and has much less odor than oil base. Oil base varnish needs to dry overnight between coats. Don't forget tack cloths. Before applying the final coat, sand lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Someone mentioned the stain varnish. I don't like them. The pigment seems to float on top of the wood instead of soaking in.
Reply:I assume you mean STAIN from light oak to mahogany? I don't know how light your oak is, but perhaps subsequent coats of the Oak stain might eventually archive your goal. Each coat will make the wood darker. If you use a mahogany stain now, It will probably be too dark. I use a "golden Oak" stain that, after about 3-4 coats looks similar to mahogany. It all depends on what mahogany your shooting for too. There are many different species and tones of the wood, some much darker than others.

If you do re-stain it, make sure you get rid of any protective coating the table might have, and make sure your stains have the same base. If the first stain was oil based, don't use a water based stain the second time.

good luck
Reply:If there is any finish on it you'll first need to strip it down to bare wood. Then apply mohogany colored stain and a polyurethane finish once the stain has dried to the manufacturer's instructions. More coats of stain will give you a darker color.

Use #000 steel wood between coats of stain or poly, sanding with the grain.

Minwax makes a product that incorporates both the stain and the poly so both steps are combined.

Will Pine wood go with Beach?

I want to buy a Pine wood bed but most of the furniture in my room has a beach finnish will the go together or will it look really bad?

Will Pine wood go with Beach?
pine wood use to date beach but i think its over so no they dont go together anymore
Reply:Depends on the color of the woods. If they're similar, it'll be fine! If the colors are waayyy different, then it might not work out so well. But only you can be the judge of that! We don't know what the pieces look like! Good luck! =]
Reply:you can pickle pine and it will have a driftwood look to it

try minwax or a brand like it
Reply:I think the real questions is the color tone of the woods. I have been a cabinetmaker for 25 years. I have found in lighter tone woods, pines, maples, beech, and the lot, it's more about the color than the name. Most light woods blend together well, as do most dark woods.

Pine can be easily stained to a closer color fo the existing beech as well. There was a suggestion of using minwax stains, I agree with this, minwax is a very forgiving product for someone who is not well versed in wood finishing.

In addition to this woods generally fit well with other woods. Even if not the same color, it is a natural product, with all it's own variations even in the same piece, so I am not generally concerned too much with "exact" matches. What is most important, is do YOU like the way it looks.

Staining pine?

On a sanded pine bed what is the best way to get that light blond color on it? Thanks

Staining pine?
After sanding you need to wipe the surface with either mineral spirits and a rag or water. Allow the surface to dry completely before moving to the next step.

If you're working with pine, keep in mind that this type of wood has a tendency to turn blotchy when treated with either type of stain (water or oil based), especially around knots. Therefore it's a good idea to use a wood conditioner first. The conditioner takes only about 15 minutes to dry and will cause the wood to accept the stain more evenly. Simply apply conditioner, let dry, then stain; let the stain dry for a couple of hours, and you're ready to go!

Stains add color but don't protect wood, so some type of protectant must be added. Don't use polyurethane, though: it always adds a slight yellow tint. Instead, use a water-based finish, which can be applied with either a brush or an aerosol spray.
Reply:Clear Polyeurethane

Steven Wolf
Reply:Pine is a very soft wood so in order to get a good finish you should sand smooth and then use a " wood conditioner" so when you stain it soaks in evenly , otherwise the wood get splotchy.

' Minwax Stains and Pre-Stain Conditioner %26amp; Finishes"
Reply:After you have sanded and wiped free of dust, put a natural stain on it. Natural brings out the wood graining, but doesn't add any color. After that has dried, finish with polyurathane for a durable, and beautiful long lasting finish.
Reply:Almost all wood darkens with age or in this case turns blond so your main concern is your top coat. Polyurethane is what most people say but I prefer a lacquer finish because of durability in hardness. Poly is a softer finish. Polyurethane does yellow though which may be the look you are after. You can purchase that in different sheen (low, medium, and high gloss) of your choice so just prepare the surface by sanding with the grain and all the way to 150 grit sandpaper and cleaning properly and you're all set. If you do not already have it, purchase the best quality brush you can afford to apply the product of your choice.

Pine will show aging in less then a year so don't over do it with any stain you may use.
Reply:If you mean like lime wash I use watered down emulsion then wax it when dry.

Suggestions needed for finishing a pine solid wood floor?

we are finishing a pine solid wood floor and need suggestions on what finish to use eg oil, varnish etc...

Suggestions needed for finishing a pine solid wood floor?
If you use oil it will have a slightly rustic look/feel, but as the floor gets marked with scraping sofas you can wipe some oil in to tone it down.

Water'based varnish is not as strong as oil based varnish. The singular advantage with water-based is that it will not darken the floor quite as much as oil-based. If you go the route of water-based then Dulux Diamond or Johnstone floor varnish are the best.

Of the oil-based varnishes, the very best by a country mile is Sadolin PV67. It is a two pack catalytic type varnish. In other words you mix two different bottles together and then you have to work fast. It is touch dry within minutes so DIYers will only be quick enough to use it when you are painting floorboards, so you can paint along three boards at a time, because by the time you get back to the start it your previous varnish will be dry. Use a 4 inch brush, keep it in the varnish when not in use to stop the brush drying out. You can put a couple of coats on a day and using the Sadolin UV sealer first will also stop some of the darkening effect. You may have to go to a proper decorators merchants like Brewers for it. (Very strong fumes when applying, windows open necessary etc. but ok next day)

Matt finish scuffs and grabs the dust too much. Gloss is slippy, highlights defects to much, satin is in my opinion the best finish.
Reply:Sorry but I guess that I will confuse the issue...I would always use alkyd base urethane NOT water based..It's more durable and gives a more realistic old pine look...I recomend the use of the fast dry products so you can put on multi coats in little time...many of them can be recoated without sanding if recoated within 8 hrs (check on product label) In high trafic areas put on 5 or so coats..I prefer the satin finish although it is slightly less durable,I find it more realistic and it dosn't show imperfections as much as gloss does.Oils are great on harder woods but not on a soft wood like pine (floors) I love products like Minwax antique oil finish on furniture or vertical surfaces, but not on a floor.
Reply:If you really care about your wood floor then use only Os wax oil it is what real wood workers use. It does not chip, peel or go opaque like a varnish is prone to do and is real easy to apply.

There are other hard wax oil products available. Check out any good woodworking or wood floor forum and the answer will be the same I reckon.
Reply:I suggest you use a water based floor sealant. They are as hard as oil based products with out the stink and mess. Oil does not do a good job of sealing and it must be re-applied periodically to maintain the finish, and it can have a strong oder.

My neighbor cut 115 privacy pine tress on my property and a lawyer said it would cost me more in Attorney fees

My neighbors cut down 115 privacy pine tree's on my property and I called a lawyer today to ask about esthetic value to make them pay and he said it would haft to go to a jury and that it would cost me probably $20,000 in fee's only to get mabie $3,000. Does that sound right? I only have a 3 acre lot with a house but still those tree were planted there for privacy and they have been growing for 14 years. My neighbors knew we owned out to there because we told them, but they were trying to say that there was supposed to be a 40 ft right of way there that they were opening back up. We had to pay $1,000 to have our property re-serveyed to prove that there was no such thing. They are part of a subdivision but we are not. They also constructed their driveway on our land which there is a fence up now but the damage is done and the road is of no use to us. I am furious! I want them to pay for the damages they have done to my property, and I cant even go outside in my yard without being cussed

My neighbor cut 115 privacy pine tress on my property and a lawyer said it would cost me more in Attorney fees
call a different attourney - get a second opinion.
Reply:The attorney fees sound a bit exorbitant. I suggest looking for another attorney. There is probably not a lot that you can get out of it other than perhaps a modest settlement, but there is a matter of principle as well and you should nnot have to endure the mocking of a neighbor who takes advantage of your property. Try small claims, no attorneys, just the burden of providing a preponderance of the evidence.
Reply:Talk to another lawyer.

The $3000 is way too low. From what you describe, you are not only entitled to the value of the trees, but punitive damages as well. What your neighbor did was an intentional trespass. This was not mistaken negligence.

A competent attorney should be able to settle this without a jury trial.
Reply:First you need to determine how much it will cost to plant 115 new trees. If it's less than $5000, then sue them in small claims court where an attorney is not needed. If it's more, then find another attorney.
Reply:crap. I'd talk to another atty; and you should have a right to recover your atty fees in a case like this
Reply:Yes, definitely talk to another Lawyer. You should have called the police when you found the trees cut down/missing. Did they at least have the decency to haul the trees away or just leave them laying in your yard? I'd be furious too!
Reply:Lawyers aren't all the same. Find a good one.

He's totally mistaken on the value of those trees. Even as pulp-wood, they're probably worth around $30,000, and the replacement cost of the privacy barrier is probably well over $100,000. The diminishment in value of your house between the loss of the trees and the encroaching driveway is probably even more than that.

As they say with doctors, "get a second opinion".

*** The cost to plant NEW trees is irrelevant. You lost the value of fourteen year old pines. Seedling pines cost about a dollar or two each. The proper value is either the loss of your property value, or the cost to put trees of the same height back where those were.

Also, you don't want the rental value of the driveway. You want it removed. Period.
Reply:I would definitely talk to a different lawyer... and I would call up nurseries in your area and ask them for a written estimate to replant 115 - 14 years old pine trees... It's going to be pricey! You also have emotional distress, loss of value to your property, damage to the soil (tire tracks that will have to be smoothed over, etc) The neighbor should also be required to pay ALL fees associated with the court/lawyer... On a side note, what happened to the trees once they were cut down? If your neighbor used any of them, you have theft charges...

I would take the nursery estimate and your survey to your neighbor and see if you can get any satisfaction (chances are, you won't) then I would find a lawyer and sue the pants off him!
Reply:The lawyer you talked to sounds like an idiot. If he is a small town lawyer and works by himself, he feels there is not enough money in it for him to help you. Go to a major law firm like Binder and Binder or whoever and tell them your case. First you have to be able to prove that they did it. Then you can sue, your lawyer will represent you, if you win, the loser will have to pay attorney's fees and all court costs, etc. and for the loss to you. Your attorney should be able to get rental fees for you for the driveway access on your property and other things. Go to a lawyer who knows what he is talking about. A large firm will take your case, make sure it is contingent on they only get paid if they win the case for you.

Is it safe to burn pine in your house?

Like Pine 2x4's. I really just want to know if it's harmful to my health as well as my families.

Is it safe to burn pine in your house?
No. I would suggest you find an alternative wood source. The sap from the pine forms creosote in your chimney which can cause chimney fires and burn your house down.

Also, if enough of it is burned, the fumes from the burning wood can make you sick.

My father always tried to burn scrap wood in the fireplace but I had to stop him because he didnt realize that it made him sick, as well as the creosote issue.
Reply:Sure, just don't burn a Christmas tree, you'd catch the house on fire. Christmas trees just burst into a ball of flame. We burn boards all the time. Pine wood burns fast, fast, fast. It is non-aroma type of firewood and like the first answer said, it creates a lot of creote, soot and ash.
Reply:Only if throughly dry, over many months.

Otherwise the sap will accumulate in the chimney and create a fire hazard.

I have large pine trees and oak trees cut down for sale, who can I sell to?

I have large pine trees and oak trees cut down for sale, who can I sell to?
Check the yellow pages in your area for a sawmill. Not sure about the pine, but they may be interested in the oak.
Reply:I'd save the pine trees and sell them for christmas, otherwise strip them and use the pine needles for mulch, maybe even the sawdust for mulch (depends on if there is any diseased parts). Stripping land of trees only makes dust and erosion so you might want to keep at least some of them. But you can always place an ad in your local newspaper to sell those.
Reply:A sawmill would be a good start.

Nice, fast growing pine trees to plant in Michigan?

My house sits on about an acre of land in Michigan. A new subdivision is being built in field behind my house. I want to plant some pretty, fast growing pine trees to block the view. What would be a good pine to accomplish this ???? What is the best time of the year to plant them ???

Nice, fast growing pine trees to plant in Michigan?
White Pines are fairly fast growing. Also Loblolly Pine, Leyland Cypress,Norway Spruce and Dawn Redwood. The best time to plant is spring or fall. Not summer, to hot. Your Wisconsin neighbor.
Reply:If you can get them, Lawson Cypress grows about 18 inches a year here in Scotland, but will probably grow faster in Michigan they will reach about 30 ft. plant them 18" to 24" apart, they don't need any attention and they are very attractive and really work great as a screen, they are not really Pine trees but most people think they are. I planted mine about 12 years ago and I now have a 30 ft high row 250 ft long and it is also an excellent wind break. If you can get 12" to 18" trees you can plant them at any time of the year except when there is frost or snow on the ground .

Don't be temped to plant taller trees as 12/18" soon overtake the larger ones.

How can I lighten real knotty pine paneling that has a varnish finish? I love it but is old and yellowish now

My living room is done in knotty pine, probably circa the mid-60's. I love the pine, but it is old and yellow-y looking and I would like to strip it somehow, but it has what looks like a thick coat of varnish on it. My husband claims it can't be done, but my grandma says that she "bleached" her knotty pine way back when, but doesn't really remember how. I would like to keep it, but it needs to be lighter! Has anyone done this? and if so, how?!!

How can I lighten real knotty pine paneling that has a varnish finish? I love it but is old and yellowish now
You will have to strip the furniture of all the top coat first (big job) Then you can get a wood conditioner or brightener which should revive the wood and bring back the natural lustre of the wood. Then you can get a stain which has a white tint to it, (check where the furniture stains are kept in the hardware store.) Follow the instructions on the can and make sure you top coat your work after staining with a non-yellowing sealer like polyurethane or varnish. Also if you are using an oil based stain make sure to use an oil based sealer, common sense but sometimes people forget.
Reply:strip it and redo with a light stain
Reply:Varnishes and shellac turn yellow over time. this is why Polyurethane is so popular. For your problem, you would need to strip the current coating and apply a new coating.

I have many pine needles from cyprus pine and wattle/eucalyptus leaves and would like to use it as mulch ?

I would like to ask ,i have heard to use lime with it.does anyone know whats the ratio is,I would like to use it for fruit trees and natives. The ratio i mean is a builders wheel barrow full either of pine or leaf that is scattered on my acreage.I dont want to go to the expense of buying manure, cheers

I have many pine needles from cyprus pine and wattle/eucalyptus leaves and would like to use it as mulch ?
These needles and leaves carry a high acid count and are not good for mulch. If you insist on using them - after scattering them completely cover with lime powder. Don't expect a good crop of flowers, fruit or veggies for at least two years. So much acid will leach from the needles it will take that long for the lime to balance things out and by then it's time to mulch again.

Is living world pine shavings ok for hamsters?

ok i went to marta's pet shop and we bought a hamster cage and then she got everything else out for us and she got pine shavings out and i havent used it yet cause i dont have the hamster yet but is that brand ok or is all pine shavings bad for hamsters

Is living world pine shavings ok for hamsters?
Shavings are alright for the hamster but they can make a real mess and some people say the dust content is not good for their little lungs.I was told by the pet store to use a produce called Yesterdays News which is designed for litter boxes it is wonderful and makes clean out so much easier and less hassle. It comes in little pellets and soaks up the pee without smelling.

Good luck.
Reply:like other small rodents , Hamsters can be allergic to wood shavings from pine trees, so it is better to avoid using any kind of them for ur hamster. shavings of fruit trees are safe.
Reply:NO!!! Get something called Carefresh
Reply:Pine and cedar shavings are terrible for all small animals, the oils in the wood will make you pet sick, not to metion the amount of dust it contains.
Reply:As a general rule pine shavings are not supposed to be good. I would recommend Yesterdays News. It absorbs really really well, looks nice and its safe.
Reply:Carefresh is better my other hamster died from pine. Cedar is also bad.
Reply:Pine shaving and cedar shaving are always bad. They can contain oils and mights that will harm your pet. Try carefresh, or yesterday's news litter.
Reply:I would strongly advise you not to use them. The shavings emit odors that can cause upper respiratory problems. Aspen bedding is a good, cheap way to go.

I have large pine trees and oak trees cut down for sale, who can I sell to?

I have two 80 yr plus oak trees, several other small ones, and a huge pine and several other small yellow pine trees that we cut down on our property in NE GA. who can i sell them to?

New to Composting and I put pine needles for browns...?

I added pine needles in my garbage can compost pile for the brown part of the pile but its been weeks and everything else is decomposing except the dried pine needles. What should I do, trash everything and start over again or is there anything that can break down the pine needles?

New to Composting and I put pine needles for browns...?
Pine needles are ok to use in a compost, particularly if there is a bad smell, but they do decompose very slowly. Depending on the size of your pile, it can take several months to make a good compost anyway. If you feel like it's just taking way too long, you can try to take the pine needles out. They are GREAT to use as a mulch. Check out some gardening web sites like GardenGuides.com or BHG.com (Better Homes %26amp; Gardens).
Reply:You're quite welcome. What you're doing is great! Keep up the good work and next time use dry leaves for the brown. Report It

Reply:get a metal mesh screen and sift the compost through it so you can remove them. The pine needles will decompose eventually but are covered with a wax layer that really slows it down. It is best to grind them up first. Don't use too much either as they are very acidic and will throw off the pH of your compost.

Rodale's does recommend it as mulch instead as it reduces some ground fungi
Reply:I don't think pine needles are good for compost because they don't easily decompose. You probably should have used leaves. Maybe if you wet them down and try to move them to the bottom.
Reply:I don`t think you need to trash it %26amp; start over, it`s just compost. Keep it damp, keep it turned %26amp; keep adding to it. it`ll be alright.

Is Premier Pet Pine Shavings safe for guinea pigs?

I have Premier Pet brand Pine Shavings for my guinea pig's bedding... and the package doesn't say kiln-dried, but my guinea pig has been sneezing and making cough-like sounds the past few days. I've only had him since Tuesday.

I'm thinking maybe the bedding is to blame, since I've recently found out pine bedding is bad for rodents if it's not kiln-dried...and the package doesn't say kiln-dried...

Should I get him new bedding or will he be ok with this bedding?

And what type of new bedding should I get him?

Is Premier Pet Pine Shavings safe for guinea pigs?
If the package doesn't say "Kiln Dried", it isn't. This is most likely your piggie's problem.

Call around to a local livestock feed store %26amp; ask them if they have Kiln Dried pine shavings. This is what I use with all my pigs %26amp; I have yet to have a problem. The feed store is much cheaper than your larger chain pet stores. A big 40 lb. compressed bale is $5.

Other good beddings to consider are aspen shavings, Carefresh, or if you're environmentally conscious, try fleece. You can read more here:

http://www.guinealynx.info/bedding.html

Good luck!
Reply:Anything made of wood is going to have an odor which smells good to us but will give your smaller animals trouble. Cedar is especially bad but I have used pine bedding with out problems for my hamsters. The best thing to use is the recycled paper, it's grey and comes in little clumps. However if your guinea pig is sneezing and you've had him less than a week I would check with the place you bought him. Maybe him mates are ill too? And is he warm enough? His cage is not near a window or drafty air duct?
Reply:dont use pine ,only cypress and aspen
Reply:The pine bedding is generally bad for animals like guinea pigs. I would really recommend getting the recycled paper kind, its better for the envirerment, and your guinea pig

Plants that grow well in shaded pine tree forests?

We have a large stand of tall pine tree's (3 acres) and nothing but dead pine needles lays on the forest floor. Nothing but a few spots of some kind of grass grows where the sun gets in. I'd like to know if there are plants that would enjoy this envioronment. I believe the mulch of the pine needles and possibly the acidity of these keeps the forest floor in there bare.

Any suggestions???

Azaleas, they love the acid in the soil. I have them planted all around my pine trees and they are beautiful

Why don't Squirrels get sticky while eating Pine Cones' nuts?

Pine cones have a very sticky sap or resin. If you would pick one up, the sap is very difficult to remove.

Yet, squirrels eat them to get the Pine nuts...but the sap does not stick to them.

When my dog walks under the Pine tree...she gets the drippings from the tree and pine cones in her paws. And I have to cut it out with a scissors!

Whats the best way for me to plant pine tree seeds from my tree?

i have a pine tree, approx 18 years old. the tree produces many pine cones. how do i start new pine trees from the pine cones?? is there some special procedure?? please advise. thank you. big joe

Whats the best way for me to plant pine tree seeds from my tree?
When cones are ripe seed is produced that can be planted in standard compost in med; size pots in shade. Keep cones indoors until they become dry, they will open, tap cones and pine nuts/seeds will drop out. They are not difficult, I have cultivated plants from gift shop painted Christmas cones, plant 1cm deep, and be patient.

How can i get brand new pine to match 120 year old walnut wood?

I have three 120 year old walnut carved wood legs and a brand new carved leg made from pine. The pine- though stained twice already with a walnut oil based stain is not near dark enough to match the genuine antique legs that at their darkest points are near black. How can I reach this efect?

What are some SPECIFIC ways to get pine to match antique walnut. I live in a rural area and do not have any specialty stores (so bizarre extremely hard to find items are really not an answer for this question).

Are there alternative products to give that balck appearance? Ist there a homemade stain? Could I use something like black show polish to give the new piece the apperance of old or even thinned down black oil paint used like a stain?

How can i get brand new pine to match 120 year old walnut wood?
rather than walnut stain use mediteranian or ebony these are both much darker
Reply:Take fine grain sand paper and clean the surface (do not “seal” the wood) take “old English (the brown/black liquid polish) and keep applying coat let dry lightly sand and recoat. (This will darken but may not be a good match you may want to pick up some scarp pine and experiment before you do the leg.) Remember that the base color of unstained walnut is kind of a “gray/black” where as pine is kind of a shallow yellow/green. On another scrap paint black, let dry, (flat paint) sand lightly then apply a flat beige/brown paint let dry and lightly sand (allow about 24 hours drying time between color coats, stain with walnut, once the stain has been applied let dry then take “craft/ceramic black antiquing and keep applying and wiping off till you get the nearest shade possible. If it is a back leg in a dim area no one should notice without it being pointed out. You may want to keep in mind that if this piece has any antique value the 15 or 20 USD it will cost for a walnut leg might be worth the investment. Go to the nearest rockler or rockler type store with one of the original legs to make the replacement walnut leg look the same all you would need to do is keep applying the dark liquid furniture polish for a few weeks till it soaks in all the details.
Reply:Id say seal it with a good sanding sealer. let dry. then use semi transparent stain to darken it. each coat will make it darker and darker, its more like painting the staining

I just planted two little pine trees....How do I care for them such as how much water a day?
just water them everyday...they dont really need ferterlising as they are conifers...they pretty tough the old pines they be right
Reply:Don't over water them because if you do they will become over dependant and need to be watered more than it would if you just water it once a week. you only need to water it if the soil is really dry, if the soil isn't dry then there is no need to water it (even if it's just damp).
Reply:With three daughters...we have been there/done that 3 times. I can tell you that we have none that lived...but call your local landscape/gardening shop and ask them the best techniques for your area...and good luck.
Reply:Water enough to dampen then soil to a depth of 1 inch. Water every day. You might want to put something around them so they aren't accidentally stepped on. Be sure to space them because pine trees won't remain small forever. Good Luck.
Reply:you need to put a gallon of water on them for about two weeks to help get the roots set. Then water again is you hit a dry spell. By next year you shouldn't have to fool with them.
Reply:Put some compost into the soil around the trees to give them nourishment. You shoudn't need to water them unless you live in a really dry area (uk or usa?)
Reply:Rat poison works wonderfully...
Reply:methalated spirits does the trick, and some rat poision

not everyone is the same but most people who are paraplegics or quadriplegics don't feel pain.
Reply:Everyone can feel pine trees.
Reply:Some feel Pine. Some feel pain.

Usually paralysis is due to nerve damage and your nerves are not only how you move your limbs, (or boughs in this case), its also how you get information back from your limbs about pain. So you would think no, right? But in fact where the nerves are damaged, sometimes you feel pain from there and your brain still thinks its comming from the limb. So a paralysed person can have quite a bit of pain even if its not actually comming from the limb.

Does anyone know if there is either a good use for these or a market to sell them?... I hate to just throw them into a landfill or incinerator facility.

Can you use Pine-Sol in a pottpouri burner?

I know someone who puts pine-sol in one of the plug in pottpouri burners and lets the fragrance fill the house. There house always smells like it was just cleaned. They say there is no harm in doing that, and I cant seem to find online if there could be any harm in it. Is the vapors that the pine-sol lets off when it is warmed in a pottpouri burner harmful to you health?

Can you use Pine-Sol in a pottpouri burner?
no pine sol contains harmful chemicals
Reply:I would not be so worried about the vapors as to the flamability of this household product. Your friend might be wiser to dilute the pinesol and spritz it through the house like an air freshener. Or, heat a pot of water to boil, take it off the flame, then add the PS and allow the steam to float through the house.

Also there are other alternatives, she could buy pine scented candles, and room sprays at the dollar stores, very cheap after the holidays, and use them all year long.

Can dogs eat pine nuts?

My Dachshunds have been eating the pine nuts that fall out of our pine tree. Are these safe for dogs to eat? The male dog in particular has put on weight lately and i think it must be from eating the nuts. Its hard to stop as the tree is huge and the nuts are always falling, so its impossible to clear them up before they get eaten when my husband and i are at work. Any suggestions?

Can dogs eat pine nuts?
I don't think it is serious but you might want to get them to stop by blocking the area or something of that nature. I really doubt that the weight gain is because of that. I have a huge tree in my yard too and I know it may be hard to block the area but if you have big fears about it I would try my best. Good luck and Happy Holidays!
Reply:Are you sure he's swallowing them? I'm asking cause I thought my dog ate them as well but when I paid more attention I noticed he only chew them up in little pieces then he spits them out.

How do you Grow a Pine Tree?

My family wants to grow a nice big pine tree in our backyard. We live in the North East. Planted a mature pinecone, but nothing happened and it shriveled up. Is there a acertain stage in which you must plant the pinecone? Also, are there any special requirments for soil or planting? Thnx in advance =) =) =)

How do you Grow a Pine Tree?
If the ends were curled up the seeds already fell out . Go with a plant . A two or three year old usually 6 "to 10" inch tall . They like acid . You can get evergreen tree food . They like to be in the sand with a little loom on top . I live in NH . I just go in the woods . When they are too close together , they don't do anything anyways . Try spring hill.com for mail order.
Reply:I suggest that you get a seedling and plant it. Pines may grow slowly depending on the soil. I just thinned about 150 acres or so that have been planted over 15 years. The best I could get out of them was pulpwood. They should have been saw timber, but the ground had been cultivated if past years and was poor soil. Good luck.

If you use it straight then yes. It can leave a residue.

If you put some in with water to begin with, you should be just fine.

you can also use a stick of pine tar, kinda like a deodorant stick... Put it on right above the tape so you dont mess the tape up and before you go to the plate rub your hands all over the tar and you should get the sticky feeling on them. It works best if you have batting gloves.

Is it ok to use pine straw for bedding for mare and foal?

I can't locate any barley or oat straw to use as bedding as some of you answerers have suggested. I was wondering if pine straw would be okay.

Is it ok to use pine straw for bedding for mare and foal?
Pine straw? Like the poster before...I've used pine shavings.

In a pinch...I threw down a bale of grass hay. With the price of hay, normally I wouldn't do that. Silly mare had her baby 2 1/2 weeks early!
Reply:Pine straw?

I've used pine shavings, which are safe if they are correctly manufactured.

Do you mean the product used in gardening, made from long pine needles? In which case, I would be cautious. Many types of pine are toxic if ingested, and the sharp needles may be a little unsafe.
Reply:Some evergreens are poisonous for horses. I've never heard of pine straw? if it's shavings, the answer is still no. You need the straw. It is extremely important to keep that umbilical opening free of dirt! Have you called some other farms, breeders, stables? Try the County Extension office, I'm sure they can give you some farms with straw. Ask at the closest Tractor Supply, heck even Lowes %26amp; Home Depot have straw! Gardeners use it.
Reply:I have foaled several mares. I dont like to use pine shavings because they are dusty and WILL get stuck to the foals' nose (or anything wet for that matter) mind you that the foal will be wet when she arrives. I recommend WHEAT straw, pine straw can be toxic, and uncomfortable to lay on. Have you ever walked on pine straw barefoot?
Reply:I don`t think so. I would wait until the foal is a yearling.

What can you treat white pine planks with so i can use them in a raised garden bed?

I have these white pine planks that are the perfect size (9"x10'x1") for my raised garden bed. I am hoping that there is something I can treat them with so they would last at least a couple of years and not attract wood loving bugs (termites or borers) I plan to use this for my vegtable garden. Any ideas??

What can you treat white pine planks with so i can use them in a raised garden bed?
Any water seal will help. However, you can't paint it. You might be able to paint one side and get away with it.

That size of board is a good size board. You might be ahead to sell them and buy pressure treated lumber for this.

Or, you can buy dog eared board planks that are used for replacement flat board fences. These are really cheap. You would just need to drill two holes on either end and could screw in a wooden tomato stake that will hold as well as the pine and will be cheaper.
Reply:Thompson's water sealer should give you at least 5 years. If you use pressure treated lumber it will last at least 10 years. I pulled a couple of my pressure treated boards (after 11 years) last year to check the inside and they look like they will probably give me at least another 2 years before I have to start over.
Reply:Pine rots pretty quick I have used 18x24 patio stones (used ones) on edge ,dug into the ground lasts forever. save the boards for something else

There is a product that is called Deglosser. You wipe in on paneling before you prime and it will take the gloss coat off of the paneling so that the primer will stick to it. You can skip this process but there will be spots that just wont stick and will peel off. So it is well worth the little more time it will take to do this step. You can also use it on your cabinets. Have fun.

P.S. Use a good primer that will one coat because pine soaks up a lot of paint.
Reply:Yes of course you can paint it, I would figure out what type of coating is on the pine, if it's a gloss or a stain? Then you need to find a paint that will adhere to that coating. When you go to purchase the paint at say a Home Depot or a Lowe's make sure to ask the worker in the paint section which brand is best for painting on the surface you want to paint on. But yes you can paint on pine.

Best wishes!
Reply:Sure. Just prime it with something like Kilz first. If it's knotty pine, you might want to take the trouble to fill and sand smooth the knots before priming and painting.
Reply:I believe you can.
Reply:Yep, prime then paint
Reply:You'll either need to sand them down or prime tham first with something like Kilz... Just be sure to wear a mask when doing either!

Once you're done, paint away :)

My Doberman Eats Pine Needles?

My Doby eats a large amount of Pine Needles. I live on a pine lot, and she eats alot of them, moreso in the fall and winter. Anyone know why or have some info. The vet I have has no clue. Really, he doesnt. I was wondering if there was some herb the dog could take?

My Doberman Eats Pine Needles?
My only concern would be that it chews them only. you don't want any of those lodged in its throat.
Reply:I don't know, maybe it's doberman thing? I've lived with many different breeds, and the fully grown doberman would eat the strangest things. Crayons, underwear, spines of National Geographics, etc.

Anyway, pine needles are high in vitamin C. Maybe that's what she's craving? Talk to your vet about my theory, and the best way to add vitamin C to your dog's diet. As long as it's not a dangerous food or supplement for dogs, vitamin C shouldn't hurt. A few of our dogs have loved carrots.

And in the meantime, good luck, and I hope you find a better answer. These websites about Vitamin C may or may not help.
Reply:pine oil can be toxic but only in very large amounts. pine needles can be hard to digest.and could cause some constipation. cheek his diet. do you feed him a cosmical dog food? if not i would look into that. another reason might be that he simply wanted some thing to chew on. if i were you i would get him a hallow chew toy like a Kong and put a few cooked veggies and peanut butter in there for him to play with when he is out side.
Reply:Well, it's kind of odd, but as long as she is not getting sick and it's not causing any long term problems, I wouldn't worry about it. Dogs eat random gross stuff; just be glad it's not her own turds or vomit.
Reply:how old is she? my dobe used to eat alot of things when she was a pup!! i had to really watch her,but she has grown out of it. i do know pine needles are not very good for any animal to eat.just watch her and if you notice her acting different take to a different vet!good luck
Reply:Have you smelt his farts recently? Forest fresh.
Reply:I think as long as your Vet doesnt think it would hurt the dog, who cares, better than him eating much worse things....
Reply:That's unusual... but then again, dogs eat grass, dead animals, and their own turd. By dog standards, your doberman's culinary tastes are pretty tame.

If the vet doesn't think it will hurt him, then it's prob. nothing to worry about.
Reply:My Dobermans all eat pine needles, pine bark, and an occasional pine cone when at our mountain property. Given the vitamin supplement we use -- NuVet (http://www.nuvet.com) -- contains pine bark, I never gave it much thought as I know from using this product that Pine Bark has been shown in clinical studies to be 20 times more effective than Vitamin C and 50 times more effective than Vitamin E as an antioxidant.

I wouldn't worry.

Why did white pine logs & white pine T&G turn different colors using the same finish?

Used clear water based polyurethane on interior of logs and T%26amp;G walls. Both are white pine. Logs turned a warn honey color, however, the T%26amp;G turned yellow. What gives? Any suggestions to make them match?

Why did white pine logs %26amp; white pine T%26amp;G turn different colors using the same finish?
Chances are the T%26amp;G, was drier than the logs. Furthermore the varying amounts of mill glaze had some effect the way the finish reacted, chemically. The easist remedy is tuncture of time. Eventually all the tones will even out (darken).
Reply:Every tree has its own unique coloring due to slight variations in the soil and water in which it grew, and the exact conditions of rainfall and slope of land, latitude, etc. There are two solutions, allow time to even the coloring; or apply some sort of stain, dye, glaze or toner to the wood so that you get a more even color. Or you could simply accept the fact that since it is a natural material there are variations, and live with it.

Dog allergic to pine needles?

Has anyone's dog been found to be allergic to pine needles. Our golden retriever has itchy, inflamed paws. We've tried everything and now we have an appointment to see an allergy and skin specialist. I'm thinking he may be allergic to pine needles, as our back yard is covered in them. Ever heard of this?

Dog allergic to pine needles?
My neighbor has a dog that is allergic to grass.
Reply:For many years my dog Pepper has had the same problem with his paws. The only thing the vet would tell me is they don't know what causes it. I looked on line for a long time until I found www.nzymes.com. They claim that this condition is from a form of yeast infection. I have just started Pepper on their program and I can already see a big difference in his condition. There is also a section on thyroid problems in dogs and cats that vets commonly over look.

Good Luck!
Reply:I am allergic to pine needles, I would suppose that if a person can be...then so can a pup. I am sure that allergy testing will help find the culprit of the paw inflammation....good luck to your pup!
Reply:It is VERY common for dogs to be allergic to pine needles. If it is just on his paws, then it sounds as if it just about has to be something that is coming into contact with his feet. Does he ever lick his feet? That can be a sign that it is an allergy. I'm glad your'e taking him to a specialist. He can get some meds there to help control the problem.
Reply:pine needles can cause an allergy is humans also so it is very possible. I wonder if benedryl works for dogs..hmm check with vet.
Reply:I'm going through the same thing with one of my dogs - although it's not pine needles. He has a very inflamed paw which he is constantly licking. I'm thinking maybe it's ear mites - he uses his foot to scratch his ear and transfers the little buggers to his foot. Not sure though. Going to the vet later in the week.

Pine tree roots?

I want to build a concrete patio and have a large pine tree. Can I cut the roots 2' to 3' away from the tree? I can see 3 big roots attached to the trunk and a big web of roots about 4' to 5' from the trunk. Woulf that jeoperdize the stability of the tree (30' high) or it has enough roots undergrouond to hold it still. I live in Souther California and the only winds we get is Santa Ana winds once a year.

Pine tree roots?
I build a patio with pavers for my hot tub spa gazebo next to a very large pine tree. I really don't suggest cutting the roots unless you want to brace and support the tree. I'm in a San Diego canyon and it wasn't the Santa Ana's that brought my tree down, it was the year we had all of the rain. It is still standing as the arborist was able to hoist it back up, but we had to tie very large ropes with cushions around the tree attached to very large poles to support it.
Reply:pine trees have wide, shallow roots. if you cut them that short it will hurt the stability.
Reply:I live in NH where there are plenty of pines. IMO cut it down, the roots are not deep and a good storm will take it out anyway. Pine makes wonderful furniture.
Reply:IF YOU CUT THE ROOTS THE TREE WILL DIE. THE ROOTS IS HOW A TREE DRINKS ITS WATER.

Why can't we eat pine cones?

Pine cones are plentiful and fall to the ground. Why don't we eat them? The must be good if they smell so nice. Has anyone eaten a pine cone or or pine needles?

Why can't we eat pine cones?
Well, a pine cone has to come out the other end, too. That just doesn't seem pleasant. =X
Reply:I was wondering the same thing.. Maybe that Show "Survivor Man" can have an episode about that.. I figure maybe you could boil them up at first, and then eat them... Probably would still be chewey.. People must have tried to eat them, especially hard core campers or people that hike the Appalachian Trail.
Reply:well there are nuts/seeds that come out of some types of pine cones they go good when your cookem with rice like you would with almonds(or peanuts) on rice
Reply:Uh, we do. They are called pine nuts and are very, very popular in cooking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_nut
Reply:because it taste like caa caa,try one for yourself if you don't believe me
Reply:you could try?
Reply:They would be rough going down.
Reply:I had pine cone cassarole with mashed pine needles and gravy. For dessert, I had tree branch pie with boiled bark.

Pine sol help?

can you put pine sol in the dishwasher???

it says that it is an all purpose cleaner, so can i???

Pine sol help?
If you want everything to taste like PineSol smells.

I really hate that stuff.

Why would you want to use it. Use what you are supposed to.
Reply:I don't think I would. Why would you want to put it in the dishwasher anyway?
Reply:Yes if you plan on a 2nd wash to remove the smell %26amp; taste.

Pine Bark Mulch?

Is there a problem with using recently cut pine bark mulch in and around the vegetable garden, namely around tomatoes and cucumbers? I usually use several sheets of newspaper first before putting the mulch on top.

Pine Bark Mulch?
As long is it's a BARK mulch, it's fine. pine wood will deplete nitrogen more substantially than would bark.

The reason is that the biologicals in the soil need nitrogen to break down the organic content.

Newspaper can act as a weed membrane, not a bad idea.
Reply:There should not be, bugs may be a concern though.
Reply:Using pine bark mulch will deplete the soil of nitrogen. I forget exactly why, but I do remember this fact from my horticulture class.
Reply:I use pink bark mulch exclusively. It is inexpensive, it lasts longer than most mulches, and it is attractive. As it decomposes, however, it leaches nitrogen from your soil. After it decomposes, it will put the nitrogen back in. You are wise to use newspaper under it. I don't use newspaper, because I have access to cowlots and I heavily enrich my soil with nitrogen via aged cow manure.

Pine Tree with Blue Berries?

My husband cam across some sort of pine tree with blue or purple berries and it made him itch.... anybody know what kind of tree it is? I live in Maryland...

Pine Tree with Blue Berries?
Yup, what you have a cedar tree (probably Red Cedar - Juniperus virginianus).... but those blue 'berries' are actually fleshy cones. Here is what they look like:

http://www.noble.org/Ag/PlantOfMonth/e_r...

I have worked around this plant, and it has at times caused some itching and a small rash, but it never lasted more than a day for me.
Reply:I live in Oklahoma and I have seen them and yes I itched too.
Reply:Juniper of some flavor, perhaps Juniperus virginiana, red cedar, one of the most common native gymnosperms in the eastern states.

Juniper berries, btw, are what give flavor to gin.
Reply:I'm not sure, but don't touch them whatever you do.

Pine Tree Sap?

I have several large pine trees in my front yard, and the sap from them is always getting on my skin and clothes. Any good ideas on how to get it off of my skin/clothes?

Pine Tree Sap?
First, it may not be possible to remove the sap from all fabrics. I'd suggest staying away from the trees in anything other than working in the garden type clothing. You can try degreasing cleaners to treat the areas before washing the clothing. Use warm water not hot. Don't wash clothes that don't already have sap on them with the ones that do. Skin is easier to clean. Try using hand cleaners sold to remove auto grease, products like GoJo or Goop. Zep makes a hand cleaner we keep next to the kitchen sink. It's a heavy duty hand cleaner with pumice. It's a liquid, which I reccomend over the old Lava bar because it's less like scouring off a layer of skin. You do NOT want to get any of these products in an open cut on your skin, it'll burn like hell.
Reply:Tree Sap Removal from Clothing

To get tree sap off clothing try Goof Off (or a product similar to that), or WD40. Spray the product on the stain, rub in, then launder as usual. For a homemade treatment, try using mayonnaise in a similar fashion.

Good luck!!....:)
Reply:Simple hand santizer in the little bottles takes pine sap off your hands, it might even work on your clothes.

Pine-sol in the eyes, what to do?

My mother got pine-sol in her eyes today..she immediatly rinsed it out with some water from a first aid kit...but one of her eyes are still really red.....it happend today so shes waiting to see if it gets better tomorrow if not im hoping she goes to a doctor...but meanwhile does anyone know of anything that might help like an eye solution such as visine..thanks.

Pine-sol in the eyes, what to do?
Try a saline eye wash. They are sold at drugstores %26amp; come w/ an eye cup.

Don't mess around w/ eye drops until you talk to a doctor.

If it doesn't help go to an urgent care center or emergency clinic soon. Waiting could allow the eye to become more irritated or damaged.
Reply:My answer is better. It came from Walgreen and manufacturer's . In an accident like that, you have no time to go to the store. Besides, the saline solution will further burn. Do as I directed.and what your mom just did. Report It

Reply:If you don't believe me; post the question in the internet. I'm sure the consensus will be similar to mine. Report It

Reply:Immediately wash her eyes with fresh water for 15 minutes. Do not use Visine. it will just make her eyes more irritated and reddened.

The following is from the manufacturer's themselves; Walgreen . com and Epinions.com: Pine Sol is an eye irritant.

First Aid:

If in Eyes - Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15-20 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing eye. Do not rub. If irritation persists, call the Doctor.

The action your mom took was very good. If the redness perist; she can use Tear-isol solution or Refresh. They are less irritating and soothing. If she can get surgilube oint;( hosp uses this all the time as an eye moisturizer during surgery and comatose pts. that would also help.
Reply:Don't see a doctor, see an optometrist. Try to get her to see them today or her eyes may get worse.
Reply:Flush with cool water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids open if necessary. Then head for a doctor or the ER.

Waiting is risky, and you get one pair of eyes for life. Artificial eyes don't see.
Reply:flush out your eye balls
Reply:Tortor is right! See an optometrist because a regular MD will not have the eqipment to fully diagnose the severity of the eye problem. Even if it's after hours you may still want to call an eye doctor. Many will see a patients after hours, especially for something like Pine-sol in the eye. Many people have the misconception that battery acid in the eye is worse than a household product in the eye. This is NOT true. Many household cleaners are basic solutions(referring to the pH), and bases are much worse in the eye than battery acid. Please call the eye doctor and explain what has happened and let him(or her) make the call.

Pine Straw question?

I live in lower Alabama. and want to use Pine Straw for around my Flower beds. how much does it cost, a bale? and how many bales would I need for around an average garden with lots of flower beds?

Pine Straw question?
The price would be around $4-6 a bale...

as for how much you would need..check

with your local farmers co-op. The co-op's

normally carry bales of pine straw.

But... if you want to save some money. Find

someone you know who has pine trees on

their property and see if they will let you rake

up and haul off what you need... that will save

you a lot of money

Pine needles have vitamin C?

I one heard somewhere, or read somewhere that pine needles have a lot of vitamin C in them. So I was thinking if you boiled them in water you, would you have a drink that was high in vitamin c? I searched this on google awhile ago and turned up nothing.

Pine needles have vitamin C?
I saw that on a TV show last night! Yes, he boiled pine needles and made a tea. He said had more "C" than orange juice. Don't know how it would taste, tho'!
Reply:Yes. That's right. I just saw that episode last night. The show is Man vs. Wild on the Discovery Channel. He ate pine needles right off the tree. Report It

Reply:You can definitely drink that . Pine needle tea used to be used to prevent scurvy. It tastes very acidic though. I tried it once when I was younger, it isn't bad but very tart.

Pine log home maintenance?

I have a pine log home and want to know what sort of maintenance is required to maintain the logs. They are not painted

Pine log home maintenance?
As a log home owner myself, I have found that routine maintenance for a log structure can extend the natural beauty for a lifetime!

I have found a good site to get you started on some of the things to consider. I have also learned that before you apply a sealant, you need to wash the logs. There is a product called TimberBrite that is supposed to be good. (I plan to try it later this summer.)

Our exterior has been coated with Sikkens which has held up relatively well.

Always check the logs for splits and make sure to repair them! I have noticed other log homes in my area that let these splits go for way too long and their walls have literally rotted through!

I wouldn't suggest painting them unless it is a last resort! This will decrease the appeal to a buyer if you ever decide to sell.

Hope this link below helps get you started. Also, just do searches on log home maintenance to find more information.

Good Luck to ya, and remember that there is "no place like (a log) home!"
Reply:Hey no problem! Hope it helped get you started on your maintenance routine! Report It

Reply:You will have to put some sort of sealant on the logs to prevent rotting. Paint will work, but I would think that would take away from the beauty of the logs.

There are a lot of sealants you can either spray or paint on. I have given you a link for one product, but you can do a search on log home sealants and find many others.

Pine Bark Mulch?

Is large chips of pine bark mulch good for trees?

Pine Bark Mulch?
I've never had a problem with pine bark mulch and have used it for years. I also use cedar in several flower beds, but like the look of the pine better. just remember that whatever mulch you use around a tree, place it in a saucer shape 2 to three feet around the trunk and about two to four inches thick. do not pile it up around the trunk of the tree. You want only about an inch or so around the base of the trunk. Any more and you can run the risk of the mulch rotting, harboring fungus or animals burrowing into it and eating your tree. good luck
Reply:I would recommend ceder mulch.

Ceder is a natural insect repellent....
Reply:Mulch is always a benefit, but as for pine bark around trees...that is questionable.

What if the bark harbors pests that attack your trees?

If you should decide to use it, be certain to leave a gap between the mulch and the tree trunk.
