Bearded dragon Pine wood enclosure?

I just read that pine wood is toxic to bearded dragons? Where is this information from? I just built a cage out of pine for my bearded dragon and then put water based poly to seal it. He has been in there for 3 days, and seems to be fine. Any comments on this??

Bearded dragon Pine wood enclosure?
hi there

ok ur best bet ... is to move ur beardie to a tank when u do this ... and instead of water base poly ... use oil base let it air out till there is no smell and wash any residue out air dryed ... use approx 3-4 coats the problem with water base the toxicans still come threw...we make huge lg wooden enclosure and have test them for yrs b4 selling them we use 4 coats of polyurethane on the inside 3 on the out side but we don't use ceder or pine we use spruce...

hope this helps
Reply:Time will tell. It's not good to use pine or cedar woods just because the aromatic properties of the wood will usually cause respiratory ailments in reptiles. While they should be avoided, you might be able to get away with using the pine for wood, just because most pine lumber has hopefully sat out for awhile and therefore released most of the toxic aromas. I would say it's not a good idea, but as my first sentence states, time will tell.
Reply:you dont want to use cedar shavings or anything cedar because that is toxic.

i think i have heard about pinewood also being toxic

but since you sealed in it may be fine but im not sure.
Reply:reptiles r us has the best advice. Pine is perfectly safe if it's sealed well. I would go a step further and once the sealer has dried for several days - place the lights in there with no lizard. The heat often reactivates the curing process and the fumes come back. It may take another couple of days for the curing to complete under the lights before you can put the beardie back in his home...:-)
Reply:Cedar has been documented to cause ulcers and lesions. Pine does not have the same obvious effects though it is suspect by some veterinarians to possibly cause reproductive and other issues. There hasn't been any real definitive data showing negative results from pine and many people still use it as a substrate. I think your enclosure would probably be fine. The dragon will not contact the wood much anyway since it is not the substrate.
Reply:take it out and put in astroturf or repticarpet it's the safest and can't cause impaction
Reply:yeah its only been there for three days so dont get cocky just yet
