Cedar or Pine?

In a welping box shoulld you use cedar or pine shavings. I was talking to someone else and they put Cedar shavings in the crate for potty training and when she use to breed she used cedar shavings. I thought you could not use cedar shavings because of the oil mixing with the urine and causeing tixic fumes. I know this is true with small animals what about puppies?

Cedar or Pine?
NO SHAVINGS! Not in a whelping box!

With my foster litter, I got a bunch of bath mats from garage sales and walmart. I also got a bunch of old blankets and comforters from garage sales and took up a collection with friends and family. Cheapo towels from the dollar store or walmart are also excellent.

The bath mats work great, you can wash them and they are comfy. The shag ones are really good about keeping them warm. They're also slightly soak proof. As long they aren't left for long periods of time they work great. I replaced them once or twice a day. Your best bet is to have a floor in the whelping box, use peel and stick linoleum for the floor, newspaper on top of that and then the bath mats or blankets/towels.

Easiest cleanup and most sanitary options. Shavings are NOT acceptable. Dust and small chips can and will cause problems. Respiratory, allergies and cuts.
Reply:I never used any type of wood shavings in the welping box. That could be really bad if the puppies swallowed them, also they will stick to the puppies being born as they are very wet when being delivered.

We always used news paper then puppy pads then towels or old bedsheets for Mom and pups to sleep on.This layereing works really well. Yes you have to wash the towels and sheets everyday, but it is much better and safer for the pups.

Please do not use wood shavings, use old towels
