What is an inexpensive pine-nut substitution?

I am into making pesto....and I have lots of basil, but pine-nuts are kind of pricey. I am going to make a lot of pesto and freeze it. I already checked e-bay and their pine-nut prices were similar to the supermarkets. I would prefer to use actual pinenuts if I can find a cheap place to get them. Thanks!

walnuts or almonds are most commonly used as substitutes in pesto, walnuts being the more widely used of the two. hazelnuts are sometimes used as well, but not as often.
Reply:I have had walnut pesto and it is great. I would toast them first though. I have never had pecan pesto, but being from the south, I will be trying it. And don't skimp on the Parmesan. Buy the good stuff (not the green can). It really makes a big difference
Reply:I was going to suggest unsalted peeled sunflower seeds, but I think I like all the answerers suggestion of walnuts better.
Reply:Either ground walnuts or pecans will work. I prefer the pecans.
Reply:Chopped walnuts.
Reply:Cashews, they have a mild but rich taste similar to pine nuts.
Reply:Walnuts make a really good pesto.
Reply:I have used walnuts with good results when making pesto. Seemed to freeze well too.
