Is Pine Shavings for bedding good for Guinea Pigs?

I read on a couple of sites that pine bedding is bad for guinea pigs, but then I read on others it was okay for them.

I just bought a guinea pig last Tuesday, and he's the first uignea pig I've ever had so I'm still learning about them.

He's recently been sneezing a LOT and I'm wondering if it's his bedding, because originally he had this pink bedding that came with his new home set we got when we bought him. Then I added some pine bedding to that, and he started sneezing.

So, is pine bedding bad for him, like, harmful?

Regular Pine bedding is very bad for them, as well as cedar, these beddings can cause respritory problems, i would switch as soon as possible, kiln dried pine bedding is okay so you could switch to that, and it should say kiln dried on the package

may i suggest switching to fleece bedding it is sort of expensive starting out but it will be MUCH CHEAPER in the long run, also it is not nearly as mess as regular beddings and if you follow the steps on the website below it is not smelly lol =)

so check this website out if you decide to

Reply:Unless you know how the shavings have been treated (I think pine is ok if it's been kiln dried), then stay away. Pine and Cedar have been known to cause respitory problems in animals.

You can use Aspen and it won't cause any problems.
Reply:Since your GP is already sneezing...I'd empty the cage, wash it all out, keep the bag of shavings away from him, switch to the grey recycled bedding, not colored, and give it a day to see if it clears up...if it persists bring him to the vet - our hamster went thru this - she eventually ended up with pneumonia - read as much as you can, and reread! They are really fun pets! and can be very personable and affectionate! Have fun!
Reply:If its been kiln dried then its ok.
